EN - "Anna and the Tooth Fairy" is the third book I illustrated for Acácias Publisher. It is very gratifying to work with characters that break away from the standard Eurocentric representation model and bring more identification to a frequently overlooked audience – Black children.
The story is very delightful, and we follow our heroine through this stage of life where the relationship with her body changes. And, in this phase of so many changes, losing a little tooth can be both shocking and magical at the same time!
PT - "Anna e a Fada dos Dentes é o terceiro livro que ilustrei para a Editora Acácias. É muito prazeroso trabalhar com personagens que fogem do padrão do modelo de representatividade eurocêntrico e que trazem mais identificação para um público muitas vezes negligenciado, as crianças pretas.
A história é muito gostosa e acompanhamos nossa heroína nessa fase da vida em que a relação com o corpo muda. E, nessa fase de tantas mudanças, perder um dentinho pode ser ao mesmo tempo chocante e mágico!
EN - I enjoy reading the text while doodling, letting my imagination guide me through the story. After refining the ideas, I move on to creating the storyboard, where I envision the application of the text and provide a more well-defined suggestion of how I envisioned the illustrations.
PT - Gosto de ler o texto enquanto rabisco, já deixando a imaginação me conduzir a partir da história. Depois de estabelecer melhor as ideias, parto para a criação do storyboard, onde prevejo a aplicação do texto e já faço uma sugestão melhor definida de como pensei nas ilustrações.
EN - Whenever I finish a page, I place a copy of it in the storyboard file. It gives me a pleasant sense of progression and reminds me of my childhood and collecting sticker albums.
PT - Sempre que finalizo uma página eu coloco uma cópia dela no arquivo do storyboard, isso dá uma sensação gostosa de progressão, e me lembra da infância e dos meus álbuns de figurinhas.
EN - Anna was inspired by the author's daughter, but I also took care not to turn the character into a caricature of the child, aiming to make her inclusive without becoming generic.
PT - Anna foi inspirada na filha da autora, mas também tive o cuidado de não transformar a personagem em uma caricatura da criança, tentando ser abrangente sem torná-la genérica.
EN - This is Anna's family. I always create several sketches until I define the visual and personality traits of the characters. As an example that not everything gets used in this phase, here is a father character who didn't make it into the story.
PT - Essa é a família da Anna, sempre faço vários esboços até definir as características visuais e de personalidade das personagens. Como exemplo de que nem tudo é aproveitado nessa fase, temos aqui, um pai que ficou de fora da história.
EN - The story ends with a step-by-step guide on how children can take care of their little teeth and emphasizes the importance of oral health.
PT - A história termina com o passo a passo de como as crianças podem cuidar de seus dentinhos e fala sobre a importância da saúde bucal.
